What is Viral Marketing?

Viral marketing is basically the Internet's equivalent of mouth-to-mouth advertising. Viral marketing is the extremely powerful and unique ability of the Internet to build self-propagating visitor streams, bringing about exponential growth to a company's Web site.

This is known as advertising and/or marketing technique that spreads like a virus by getting passed on from consumer to consumer and market to market. (Examples: Hot Mail and Yahoo). When Hotmail users send email, they unwittingly send the recipient the tagline at the bottom of the message. Viral marketing techniques have the potential to start very small and grow to enormous proportions. This is an effective online marketing technique because of the speed and efficiency of Internet communications.
